Born in 1943 in Daegu and studied painting at the Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. Lee mainly created performance-based works in the 1970s and during the 1980s he shifted his focus to media including painting, pottery, and photography. His oeuvre encompasses such a diversity of genres however painting always has been his interest. That is because he believes painting expresses his thoughts most sensitively and delicately. Endless cultivation and training conveys his spirit precisely in the interactions between body and brush, paint and canvas. He believes that a bright and clear spirit can somehow be attained on some level.
